Johnny Chan was born in the city of Guangzhou in 1957, and spent most of his childhood on the move. He spent five years in Guangzhou before moving to Hong Kong. Soon after, the family relocated to Phoenix, Arizona. Five years later, they relocated to Texas and established a restaurant chain. This caused Chan a lot of problems because he had a hard time adjusting to the different cultures and curricula.
He went to the University of Houston. However, at the age of 21, he dropped out without finishing his bachelor’s degree to pursue his passion for poker.
