John Simm was born on July 10, 1970, in Leeds, England. He was the oldest son out of three. He grew up in areas including Blackpool, Burnley, Nelson, Colne, and Manchester in North West England. Ronald, like his father, was a musician, and John started singing and playing guitar at the age of twelve. Moving on to the more experienced side of his life, he began his profession in 1992. Between the 1990s and the 2000s, he was a founding member, composer, and guitarist with the rock band Magic Alex. He also portrayed Joby Johnson in an episode of the TV show Rumpole of the Bailey. He then went on to play a range of characters, including a madman in The Bill, a lovestruck schoolboy in Heartbeat, and a drugged-up thief in The Locksmith, during which time he perfected his technique in front of the camera. In 1995, he portrayed the disturbed adolescent Bill Preece in the famous ITV police drama Cracker.
In the same year, he was nominated for Best Actor at the Valencia Film Festival, beating out Dennis Hopper. The following year, he made his professional theatrical debut at the Bush Theatre in the Simon Bent drama Goldhawk Road, directed by Paul Miller.
