He is an American citizen of mixed heritage (Welsh, English, Scots-Irish, Northern Irish, and Scottish). His parents’ names are Arthur Washington Lithgow III (father) and Sarah Jane (mother).

His father is a prominent producer and director who formerly ran the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey. Similarly, his mother used to be an actress. He also has a brother called Robin Lithgow. John Lithgow attended Princeton High School in Princeton, New Jersey.
