Joel Spolsky was born in 1965 in New York City to Jewish parents. Joel was raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and remained there until he was in his mid-teens. Joel later moved to Israel with his family, where he finished high school and served in the military with the Paratroopers Brigade.

Joel was one of the founders of Kibbutz Hanaton in Lower Galilee and later returned to the United States of America to finish his education. Joel Spolsky attended the University of Pennsylvania for a year before transferring to Yale. Joel enrolled at Pierson College and graduated in 1991 with a BS summa cum laude in Computer Science.

Joel Spolsky began his career in 1991 when he joined Microsoft as a Program Manager in the Microsoft Excel group. He developed Excel Basic and oversaw Microsoft’s Visual Basic for Applications strategy. In 1995, Joel Spolsky moved to New York City to work for Juno Online Services and Viacom. After five years, Joel founded Fog Creek Software and created Joel on Software, one of the first blogs created by a business owner.

Joel Spolsky appeared in and co-produced Aardvark’d: 12 Weeks with Geeks in 2005. It was a documentary about the development of Fog Creek’s Project Aardvark, which was remote support equipment.

Three years later, in 2008, Joel Spolsky and Jeff Atwood co-founded Stack Overflow, a question-and-answer community site for software developers. Joel served as the company’s CEO until October 1, 2019, when he was succeeded by Prashanth Chandrasekhar. Since then, Joel has served as Chairman of Stack Overflow.
