He began his musical career as Joe Ritchie in the mid-1960s, recording an LP titled Little Joe Sure Can Sing. He then became a member of the pop band Joey Dee & the Starliters, where he began playing guitar. However, with the exception of a brief appearance in the 1975 film “The Death Collector,” Joe was unable to launch his career. He then decided to abandon performing and relocate to New York in order to build a restaurant.
However, after seeing Pesci’s performance in “The Death Collector,” Robert De Niro was so taken with the film that he brought it to the attention of filmmaker Martin Scorsese, who featured Joe in his 1980 film “Raging Bull.” This was the first in a long string of supporting roles for Joe, whose portrayal of a menacing tough guy earned him Golden Globe and Academy Award nods. Soon after, he became the busiest actor in the business, appearing in Rodney Dangerfield’s 1983 comedy “Easy Money” and Sergio Leone’s 1984 epic “Once Upon a Time in America.”
After starring in the flop 1985 sitcom Half Nelson, his on-screen appearances began to dwindle. Then, over the next three years, he appeared in several films, including 1987’s “Man on Fire” and 1988’s “Moonraker.” Joe was then a part of the infamous “Lethal Weapon 2” film in 1989, and he was a part of a performance that showcased his comic relief ability. Later in the series’ run, the actor appeared in the third and fourth editions, respectively in 1992 and 1998. In 1990, Joe starred in the family comedy “Home Alone” and had an Oscar-worthy performance in Martin Scorsese’s “GoodFellas.”
Even though Joe received bad reviews for his first lead role in 1991’s “The Super,” Joe earned positive reviews for an unorthodox character in Oliver Stone’s epic JFK the following year. Then, in 1992, he reintroduced his comic talents as the nominally rare lawyer in the smash courtroom comedy “My Cousin Vinny,” a film that went on to achieve cult status. In 1995, back in his mafia home, Joe rejoined with Scorsese and De Niro for the epic Casino, taking on a role that must have felt familiar to the seasoned actor. However, two ill-fated 1997 comedies, Eight Heads in a Duffel Bag and Gone Fishin’, cast doubt on Joe’s talents as the lead actor.
After devoting time to a record, Vincent LaGuardia Gambini Sings Just for You in 1998, Joe Pesci announced his retirement from acting in 1999. He did, however, occasionally appear on the big screen, appearing in De Niro’s 2006 film “The Good Shepherd” and co-starring with Helen Mirren in 2010’s “The Love Ranch.” Joe returned to his wheelhouse in 2019 with De Niro and Al Pacino in Scorsese’s “The Irishman.” This time, he was portraying Russell Bufalino, a low-profile but powerful Pennsylvania mafia lord. Additionally, the one who allegedly directed the assassination of Teamsters Union President Jimmy Hoffa.
