G.W. Zoo employed John Finlay as an employee in mid-2003, and within a month, he developed a relationship with him. He began dating J. C. Hartpence the following year. Hartpence is an event planner who assisted him with the organization of his touring animal show.
By this time, his relationship with Hartpence had worsened owing to drug and alcohol abuse. Their relationship ended after he vowed to murder Hartpence and give his body to the zoo’s most fantastic tiger. Hartpence eventually roused him by holding a revolver to his head. Travis Maldonado arrived at the zoo later that month. And, like Finlay, Travis quickly developed feelings for him. He, Travis, and John married each other in an unauthorized ceremony less than a month later.
