Jim Koch

Jim Koch, the person who with a rare simplicity seemed to have lived the American dream entirely by brewing a glass of beer in America and making American Beer worthy of wanting, attests to that without any reservation. God must have given a more abundant reward for a victory with a China Bowl full of milk than for a glass of beer. When he first began Samuel Adams Beer, American Beer was a joke. When you lift the glass to your throat and realize that you are drinking the best beer in the entire world, your pride in each pint of Samuel Adams instantly melts. It was created by Jim Koch.

Early Life & Biography

Jim Koch was born on May 27, 1949, in Cincinnati, Ohio. His parents, Charles Joseph Koch Jr. and Dorothy Kautz Koch are of German ancestry, and his family has a long history of beer brewing, with his father emerging as a brewer for a Cincinnati beer manufacturer. Koch did well in school and received a Harvard University Business Administration degree.

Jim Koch Education

He earned a law degree as well. He became an instructor at an adventure program because he was bored with life at Harvard and desired to accomplish something significant, away from the bookish life, after observing how all the persons and things appeared to be in disguise. When he left Harvard, he was 23. When he founded his brewery, he used the lessons he had learned from navigating life’s desert, particularly the one about holding onto assets until they could produce more. After experiencing life, he grew jaded and went back to his studies and Harvard, where he finished his double degree.
