Career
Boeheim began his professional career with the Eastern Professional Basketball League’s Scranton Miners after graduating from Syracuse, where he won two championships and was a second-team all-star (SU Athletics).
Boeheim decided to pursue a coaching career in 1969, accepting a position as a graduate assistant at Syracuse University under Roy Danforth. He was promoted to full-time assistant coach shortly thereafter and was a member of the coaching staff that guided the Orangemen to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1975, reaching the Final Four.
Danforth left in 1976 to become the head basketball coach and athletic director at Tulane University. He was then promoted to head coach. In 1986, Boeheim was offered the head coaching position at Ohio State but chose to remain at Syracuse. In each of his 42 seasons as head coach, Boeheim has guided Syracuse to the postseason. Syracuse has been eliminated from the playoffs only once, in 1993.
Boeheim has been named Big East Coach of the Year four times and District II Coach of the Year ten times by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Boeheim received two additional awards in 2004. The first came in the spring when he was presented with the Clair Bee Award in recognition of his contributions to the sport of basketball. In the fall of the same year, Boeheim received Syracuse University’s Arents Award, the university’s highest alumni honor.

Syracuse started the 2019–20 season poorly, losing 48–34 to Virginia, the lowest point total in Boeheim’s career. In the ACC Tournament, SU defeated North Carolina 81–53 to win its final game of the season and upset the Tar Heels for the first time since 2014. This would be the final game due to COVID-19/. Syracuse would upset third-seeded West Virginia in the Sweet 16 of the 2020–21 season before falling to eventual Final Four participant Houston.
