Jill was married to her then-husband Carson Bryan for 19 years until they divorced. Jill said on Craig Shoemaker’s podcast that her then-husband was never okay with her going out three or four times a week to see comedy acts. Their children stayed with her parents since Dad would be enraged if she appeared on the program. She said that being a comedian involves a commitment, as well as a commitment on the side of the partner since there are many late nights. She began dating a man after her divorce. They dated for over four years before splitting up.
It was difficult for her to get through it, she added, and there was a lot of sobbing and grief, but she had to go on. How did she find her real calling as a stand-up comedian?
Jill realized her true calling of stand-up comedy in early 2006, at the age of 36. Her then-husband accompanied her to the comedy performance and promised her she’d be brilliant at it once they’d been married for a decade. She then joined up for an open mic after a few months and fell in love with it. She went to the open mic, told jokes, and hung around with the comedians to discover what it was all about from them.
According to Jill, she felt stand-up was her genuine calling since she always looked forward to her next performance, no matter how worried or frightened she was. Although Jill was married at the time, she began using her husband’s surname Bryan, so no one knew she was a famous sister. During the TEDx Talks, she said that she could always get people to listen or engage someone enough to listen to what she had to say. Jill believes that in order to develop in comedy and earn it, one must make a genuine effort to create and re-write must joke, and make it count regardless of how many hands are given to you to assist you re-write. She understood she had to go it alone if she wanted to further her comedic career.
