Jesse Louise Jackson Sr. was born on October 8, 1941, in Greenville, South Carolina, USA. He graduated from Sterling High School and then attended the University of Illinois before transferring to A&T University in Greensboro, North Carolina.

He became involved in local civil rights protests against segregated theaters, libraries, and restaurants at that time. He earned a B.S. in Sociology and began working full-time on the Civil Rights Movement in 1966.

Career

He began commanding attention when he began working for Martin Luther King Jr. He rose to prominence while working for Martin Luther King Jr.’s SCLC. He has been actively involved in civil rights activism movements, in which he has participated or played a role.

Jackson was a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and oversaw the Chicago branch of the SCLC’s economic arm, Operation Breadbasket. He was later elevated to the position of national director. In Washington, DC, he assisted with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s poor people’s crusade.

Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity) began in December 1971 and was later renamed People United to Serve Humanity by Jackson. In 1984, he resigned from his position as president of PUSH to run for the Democratic presidential nomination. He founded the Rainbow Coalition the same year. However, in 1996, the two organizations (PUSH and Rainbow Coalition) merged.

His international roles include working independently to secure the release of anti-American regime prisoners. During the 1990s, prior to the Persian Gulf War, he worked to free hostages and secure the release of three US soldiers during the Kosovo conflict.
