Jenifer Jeanette Lewis was born on January 25, 1957, in Kinloch, Missouri. She was the youngest of seven children; her mother worked as a nurse’s assistant and her father as a factory worker. When she was five years old, Jenifer began singing in the church choir. She went to secondary school in Kinloch and afterward went to Webster University in Webster Groves for college. Jenifer later went to New York to concentrate on her musical career after receiving an honorary degree from Webster in 2015.
