Jeffrey Garten Biography
Jeffrey Garten was born in 1946 into a Jewish family. Ruth Garten and Melvin Garten are his parents. His father was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in 1953 for his service during World War II. Jeffrey also has a brother named Allan Garten, who is now a retired federal prosecutor and lives in Portland.
Jeffrey Garten graduated from Dartmouth College with a BA degree in 1968, then went on to earn his master’s degree in 1972 and his Ph.D. in 1980 from John Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies. Jeffrey served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1972. In 1971, he joined the Riya Thai Army as an advisor. He also served as a Lieutenant in the 82nd Airborne Division.
Jeffrey has also held economic and foreign policy positions in the administrations of Ford, Carter, and Nixon. He then went to Wall Street to work for the Blackstone Group and Lehman Brothers. Jeffrey had also lived in Tokyo to expand and direct the Asian investment banking for the firm where he had previously worked on Wall Street. Jeffrey Garten married Ina Rosenberg, who hosted Barefoot Contessa for Food Network and won three Emmy awards for it, in 1968.
