Belmondo’s father, Paul Belmondo, was a Pied-Noir sculptor born in Algeria of Italian ancestry to Sicilian and Piedmontese parents. Sarah Rainaud-Richard, his mother, was a painter. As a child, he was more interested in sports than in school, with a particular fondness for boxing and soccer.

Belmondo wanted to be an actor. He spent his late adolescent years at a private theater school and started performing comedy skits in the provinces. Jean-paul studied under Raymond Giraud before enrolling at the Conservatoire of Dramatic Arts at the age of twenty. He spent three years there studying. He would have undoubtedly won the award for the outstanding actor had he not participated in a skit ridiculing the school, which upset the jury; as a consequence, he only received an honorable mention in August 1956, “almost setting off a riot among his furious fellow students,” according to one account.
