Career

He traveled to North America after being picked by the Predators and played his first professional season with the Hampton Roads Admirals of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). With a 36-17-4 record in his first season, he was voted ECHL Rookie of the Year and Goaltender of the Year, as well as being selected to the All-Rookie and First All-Star teams. The bulk of the next three seasons were spent with Nashville’s best minor league club, the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League. He went 53-49-12 with Milwaukee and saw minimal play with the Predators. However, he was unable to gain a regular berth with the Predators, playing in just 6 games and going 0-4 for the club.

Laák opted to return to Europe after failing to stay with the Predators, spending the 2003-04 season with SKA St. Petersburg in the Russian Super League. The next year, he relocated to the Czech Republic to play with HC Pardubice in the Czech Extraliga, where he would remain for the next five seasons. He had a lot of success with Pardubice, going 116-85-5 and guiding them to the league title in 2004-05. Laák played the 2009-10 season with Atlant Mytishchi of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) after a successful spell in the Czech Extraliga. As the squad was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, he compiled an 11-6-4 record. He also spent part of the season on loan with HC Koice in the Slovak Extraliga, where he appeared in 17 games.

For the 2010-11 season, Laák signed a one-year deal with Jokerit of the Finnish SM-liiga. During the regular season, he had a 14-11 record with a.923 save percentage, but Jokerit lost its quarterfinal series against HIFK despite his efforts, which included a.940 save percentage and 1.94 goals-against average.

Laák returned to the KHL in 2011, signing with Amur Khabarovsk. Laák has long been a member of the Slovak national team. He has represented Slovakia in nine IIHF World Championships, two Winter Olympic Games, and one World Cup of Hockey. He helped Slovakia achieve its first and only gold medal at the 2002 IIHF World Championship in Sweden, as well as silver at the 2000 IIHF World Championship and bronze at the 2003 IIHF World Championship.
