Jamey Johnson was born on July 14, 1975. His birthplace was Enterprise, Alabama. He did, however, grow up in Montgomery, Alabama. He was influenced by country music acts such as Alabama and Alan Jackson even as a child. Johnson enrolled at Jacksonville State University after graduating from Jefferson Davis High School. Johnson was a member of the Marching Southerners at Jacksonville State University.
Johnson never finished university because he left after two years to join the United States Marine Corps Reserve. He spent eight years in the Marine Corps. While in the Marines, he began playing country music in various Montgomery bars. Johnson moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in 2000 to pursue a career in country music.
