James has been a linebacker and punter since high school. He only appeared in seven games as a junior, but he earned 78 tackles and three sacks and was selected All-County. As a senior, he had 170 tackles, 33 stops, 11 sacks, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, an interception, and two defensive touchdowns. Furthermore, despite obtaining offers from other institutions such as Louisville, Marshall, North Carolina, UCF, South Carolina, Ole Miss, and Wake Forest, he picked Clemson in February 2015.
In his debut season as a freshman in 2016, Skalski had 14 tackles, eight of which came on special teams. As a redshirt junior in 2019, he was second on the team in tackles with 105, including 7.5 for loss, 4.5 sacks, four pass breakups, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. He also played in the College Football Playoff National Championship versus LSU in 2020, with six tackles, a sack, and a pass deflection. As of today, he signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agency on 13th May 2022 meanwhile released on 31st August 2022.
