Career
He was recruited to the AFL by Essendon from the 1990 AFL Draft; however, owing to a significant hip injury and other ailments in his junior football career, he was not taken until choice number 79, Essendon’s eighth and one of the draft’s last picks. Hird missed much of his debut season with the club in 1991 due to injuries. At the conclusion of the season, a vote was conducted to determine if he should be delisted. The majority (4-2) decided to delist Hird, but coach Kevin Sheedy, seeing a bright future for the youthful Hird, opted to retain him. Hird eventually stayed with the club.
As a late substitute for former captain Terry Daniher, he made his senior debut against St Kilda at Waverley Park in 1992. Hird played most of the season with the Essendon Reserves, who won the championship that year under Denis Pagan.
Immediately after Hird resigned from sports, there was great conjecture about whether he would be interested in coaching at an AFL club, mainly Essendon.
After initially avoiding inquiries regarding his future, Hird revealed in August 2010 that “something in me, deep in my heart, tells at some time I want to coach Essendon.”
Many people were taken aback by Hird’s statements, including former premiership teammate Matthew Lloyd, who said that Hird had “He’s transformed his whole character in terms of how he answers his questions… Just by saying, ‘I’ll coach one day.’ I’d want to coach Essendon one day.’ Even such words, I haven’t heard before.” Hird, Essendon’s “beloved son,” made these remarks “, fueled speculation over then-Essendon coach Matthew Knights’ future. Following these statements, speculation circulated that Hird was part of an unofficial arrangement with the Essendon board to replace Matthew Knights for the 2011 AFL season.
