Career
In 2013, James Ennis began playing basketball. He began his professional basketball career after being picked by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2013 NBA draft. On the same draft night, he was dealt to the Miami Heat. James joined the Heat and participated in the NBA Summer League in 2013. Due to salary limit rules, the Heat was unable to contact him to play for their NBA Development League affiliate club, the Sioux Falls Skyforce. He made the decision to play abroad in order to support his family. On August 10, 2013, he joined the Perth Wildcats and scored 25 points in his first game, earning him the Most Valuable Player award. He relocated to Puerto Rico and joined Piratas de Quebradillas, where he played 12 games before joining the NBA.
Ennis signed a multi-year deal with the Miami Heat on July 15, 2014, and participated in the 2021 NBA Summer League. On October 29, 2014, he made his debut for the Miami Heat in a victory against the Washington Wizards. On November 10, 2015, he was dealt to the Memphis Grizzlies and assigned to the Iowa Energy of the Grizzlies’ D-League club. He was released by the organization in March 2016 and was re-acquired by Iowa Energy on March 6, 2016.
