During his recovery from his injuries, he borrowed a guitar from a neighbor and taught himself to play it. After seeing a guitarist perform at the campus bar, he asked the owner if he could perform there.

He quickly became a regular at the bar and began writing his material. Then he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he opened a savings account after telling the bank teller that he was a singer and songwriter. The teller then asked if he had any recordings available. He then provided a CD of his work, which was sent to the Music Publishing Company.
