The motivation for his decision to play for his home country
Irvine chose to play for his own nation since his father, who was born in Aberdeen, was eligible to play for Scotland. He even represented Scotland at the under-19 level before moving to Australia in September 2012, and he made his debut for the Australian under-20 squad in an October friendly against Portugal. In a 2012 interview with the Daily Record, he stated that having to pick between Socceroos and Scotland was a difficult choice.
He says he grew up wanting to play for Australia after spending most of his childhood watching Socceroos. At the same time, he had always had a strong connection with his Scottish ancestors, and being chosen by Scotland was a big honor for him and his family.
“I didn’t regret anything, but in the end, I wanted to play for the Socceroos.” That is where my loyalties lay, but it was a difficult choice.
He continued,
“I’d want to play for both, but that’s not how it works, so I’ll have to stick with Australian.”
Irvine advocated for homosexual rights and believes the World Cup is a chance not to be missed
Irvine has relatives and friends who are members of the LGBTQIA+ community and has seen their marginalization and discrimination for a long time. He felt compelled to speak out on LGBT rights, on which he has been vocal in recent years, but he believes that collective action is always more effective than individual action. According to Irvine, homophobia still exists in the football world, and the toxic male attitude that football sadly has at times does not make those from the LGBT community feel welcome and a part of the game.
He advocates for the change he believes is most needed. Irvine too claims to have seen a significant shift in the previous several years. He believes that players have a significant role to play in making information accessible, and that speaking out, as he has had to do many times during his career when he has heard homophobic comments, would be crucial.
He believes the World Cup is a global platform that should not be squandered because there is a lack of clarity and a sense that LGBTQIA+ people will be unwelcome at the global tournament. He also hopes to see collective action at the World Cup because playing on the biggest stage, in the biggest tournament in the sport, raises the platform and attention of individual players and footballers as a collective to speak about issues that matter.
His secondary hobby, apart from sports, is playing the guitar.
Guitar has always been a secondary interest in football. Despite not having a musical background, he was inspired by the music that his parents performed, which led him to pursue a musical career at a young age. When he was little, he was fascinated with toy guitars and enjoyed pushing the buttons and hearing the noises.
His mother realized that he was receptive to music and gave him a guitar when he was four years old. Irvine claims that he performed in a variety of bands throughout high school. He taught music group performances as a topic at school, so they were doing it on an academic level in addition to performing for enjoyment. Growing up, his guitar idols were Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, and Prince, and he yearned for a rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle.
Relationship
Irvine is now in a relationship with Jemilla, his girlfriend. During an interview with The Scotsman, he referenced his partner Jemilla when discussing his tattoo, which he claims he did himself. After completing Netflix, he and his partner decided to tattoo each other during a lockdown. He also said that he had his ears pierced. It is unclear when they began dating, but the pair are enjoying their time together. Jemilla is still not his wife.
Net Worth
According to reports, his net worth is believed to be over $2 million as of December 2023. In 2013, his salary was 639,000 euros.
