Irina first established a name for herself as a bright junior skater when she won bronze at the 1994 World Junior Championships in Colorado Springs in December 1993. She maintained her progress in the 1994-95 season, taking bronze at the 1995 Russian Championships to qualify for her first senior ISU Championship after earning the 1995 World Junior championship in November 1994 in Budapest. She fought back from a fall in the short program to skate the third-best free skating and finish fifth overall at the 1995 European Championships.
Irina earned a silver medal in figure skating for her nation at the 2002 Winter Olympics, becoming just the second Russian woman to do so. In addition, She has a reputation as a writer.
