Ilhan Omar is an American politician. Omar was elected as the United States Representative for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district in 2019. This district encompasses the entire city of Minneapolis. Ilhan is the first African-born naturalized citizen, the first Somali-American, and the first non-white woman elected in Minnesota.

Ilhan Omar Biography
Ilhan Omar is a Somalian woman who was born in Mogadishu, Somalia and spent her childhood in Baidoa, Somalia. Her mother died when Omar was two, so she was raised by her father and grandfather. Omar and her family spent four years in a Dadaab refugee camp in Garissa County, Kenya, to escape the war. They arrived in New York, America, in 1992, and lived in Virginia for a while before moving to and settling in Minneapolis.
