Herman Edwards was born on an Army base in Eatontown, New Jersey, to a World War II veteran and a German lady named Martha. He played collegiate football at the University of California in 1972 and 1974, Monterey Peninsula Junior College in 1973, and San Diego State University in 1975. (SDSU).

In 2012, Edward appeared in an episode of Broke that was heavily based on the high number of bankruptcy and poor financial decisions made by professional athletes. Herm was named senior adviser to the proposed Major League Football in 2015.
Edwards played nine seasons in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles, from 1977 to 1985, and was a member of the team that won Super Bowl XV. His 33 career interceptions are just one short of the team record.
Edwards later played for the Los Angeles Rams and the Atlanta Falcons before retiring in 1986. The pinnacle of Edwards’ playing career occurred in the final seconds of a game against the New York Giants at the Meadowlands on November 19, 1978.
With no timeouts remaining, the Giants defeated the Eagles 17–12. Giants quarterback Joe Pisarcik attempted to pass the ball to defensive back Larry Csonka rather than simply accepting the snap from center and kneeling. However, the ball became loose, and Edwards scooped it up and returned it for a touchdown, giving the Eagles a 19–17 victory.
The play became quite famous in Philadelphia, earning the nicknames ‘The Miracle in the Meadowlands’ and ‘The Fumble’ in New York. As a result of ‘The Miracle in the Meadowlands,’ the victory formation was created.
It became known as ‘Herman Edwards Play.’ After his playing career ended, Edwards worked as a defensive assistant at San Jose State from 1987 to 1989. On January 28, 2001, Edwards was named head coach of the New York Jets. Edwards led the Jets to a 39–41 record in five years as head coach.
Edwards’ first regular-season game as the Kansas City Chiefs’ head coach ended in a 23–10 home loss. Herm Edwards led the Kansas City Chiefs to a string of defeats. On January 23, 2009, he was fired after the contentious decision backfired, resulting in a loss to the Carolina Panthers.
In 2009, Edwards was hired as an analyst for the network’s NFL Live show. On December 3, 2017, Edwards was named head coach of the Arizona State football team.
