Henryk Orenstein was born to a Jewish family in Hrubieszów, Poland, on 13 October 1923. He was raised as a Jew and was transported from his village to Nazi concentration camps, surviving five of them. He went to the United States after the war. Orenstein and his three brothers, as well as his father, escaped to Olyka when the German army invaded Hrubieszów in September 1939. The Orenstein’s stayed in Olyka for two years before returning to Hrubieszów to live with their mother and sister.

Orenstein founded Topper Toys, which created well-known toys such as the “Suzy Cute” tiny doll brand and the Johnny Lightning model car line. He was inspired to start the company after seeing a bride doll in a department store window display for $29.95. Orenstein earned his first million dollars after becoming successful with his first dolls. Orenstein is credited with inventing the Transformers toy, as well as a device for displaying hole cards in poker games. Former Hasbro CEO Alan Hassenfeld credits him as “the trigger” for the existence of Transformers. He also got Hasbro to acquire these odd-looking Diaclone and Micro Change toys and repackage them as Transformers. U.S. Patent 5,451,054 is one of many inventions that led to Transformers being created.
Orenstein created and is an executive producer of FSN’s Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament.
