Nelson earned the part of Dwayne on the first African-American adolescent comedy, What’s Happening!!, when he was 16 years old. From August 5, 1976, through April 28, 1979, it aired on ABC. The series debuted as a summer series. Following the collapse of numerous other network programs and favorable ratings and reviews, What’s Happening!! Resumed as a weekly series in November 1976. Ernest Lee Thomas also portrayed Roger “Raj” Thomas on the program.
The comedy continued to air regularly until 1979, but with low ratings. What’s Happening!! was partially inspired on Eric Monte’s film Cooley High. From 1985 through 1988, a successor series called What’s Happening Now!! ran in first-run syndication, with most of the principal cast members repeating their roles.
