Richard Morales Jr. was born on July 18, 1979, to a Jamaican mother and a Puerto Rican father. His early years were spent in the Bronx, New York. But when he was ten years old, his parents separated. Later, as Gunplay was playing, his father returned to Puerto Rico. In Carol City, South Florida, his mother and younger brother made their home. After being required to repeat the ninth grade, Gunplay dropped out of high school at 15. After leaving school, he began using and selling cocaine. He spent $600-700 weekly on drugs before his record deal and thousands more after that.
