Pinocchio is a well-known tale, whether to youngsters of this or previous generations. The main character from Carlo Collodi’s 1883 Italian book has long been a pop cultural phenomenon, due to the greater access that Disney’s 1940 musical adaptation afforded to audiences of different ages and languages. Guillermo del Toro is bringing the classic narrative to life in a darker, more twisted interpretation.
This is not the first time the director has combined fantasy, fairytale, and horror. He had already done an excellent job with Pan’s Labyrinth, bringing to life a complex and tortured universe inside the film. Pinocchio, presumably, will do the same for its namesake iconic figure. Del Toro, who just published a new Netflix series named Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, said that making an adaptation of the film was always his desire. Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio trailer: A never-before-seen reimagining
Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio has long sparked debate among fans and cinephiles alike. The filmmaker has never worked in the field of cartoon filmmaking, which should lead to some extremely intriguing disclosures. The video showed a lot about the picture, including the gloomy cartoon design that speaks its own language.
The picture was meant to be released more than six years ago, but continuous delays culminated in a postponement until 2022. The plot remains the same: a wooden kid dreams of becoming a real human and embarks on several adventures. The following is the summary of the forthcoming film:
“In Italy, a father’s request miraculously brings a wooden son to life, allowing him to care for the kid.”
The cast of the film is impressive, with some of Hollywood’s greatest celebrities engaged. Gregory Mann will play the eponymous Pinocchio, while David Bradley will play the iconic Geppetto. Tilda Swinton will portray the fairy, while Ewan McGregor will be Sebastian J. Cricket. Other notable cast members include Finn Wolfhard, Ron Perlman, Cate Blanchett, Tim Blake Nelson, John Turturro, and Burn Gorman.
Del Toro explained his decision to use stop-motion animation despite the extra expense and his lack of familiarity with the medium:
“I believe that the beauty of stop-motion animation, and the reason it has a very demanding and fragile condition as a production and narrative approach, is that it [needs] roughly the same rigor and delivery as a live-action picture…
You’re planning and physically constructing a set, aging the walls, and making every prop. It must suit not just the setting, but also the ‘hand-held performers.'” The film, which is now available on Netflix, had an earlier festival run and has already won high accolades from reviewers. It presently has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 97% and is likely to do well on the streaming market as well.
