Gerry Cooney was born on Long Island into a working-class Irish-Catholic family. His father encouraged him to pursue a career as a professional fighter. His brother, Tommy Cooney, was also a boxer who advanced to the finals of the New York Golden Gloves Sub-Novice Heavyweight division. Cooney’s grandparents also lived in Placentia, Newfoundland, Canada.

Career
During his career, Gerry defeated former title challengers Jimmy Young and Ron Lyle, both by ‘knockout,’ in a fight that was stopped due to cuts sustained by Young. As a result, he was ranked first by the WBC and eager to face champion Larry Holmes.
In 1981, he knocked out former world heavyweight champion Ken Norton with a blisteringly powerful attack just 54 seconds into the first round. As a result, he set a new record after breaking Lee Savold’s 1948 record for the quickest knockout in the main event at Madison Square Garden.
After a long layoff, Cooney fought again in September 1984, knocking out Phillip Brown in the fourth round in Anchorage, Alaska. He fought again that year and won, but personal issues kept him away from the ring.
Cooney faced former world heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Michael Spinks in a title fight in 1987, which he lost.
Cooney has 28 wins and three losses in his professional career, with 24 knockouts. In any of his fights, he has never gone the distance in a 12 or 15-round match. On The Ring’s list of the “100 Greatest Punchers of All Time,” he is ranked number 53.
