Gerald Chatman is presently the Tulane Green Wave’s defensive line coach. According to many reports, he is scheduled to join the Florida Gators as defensive line coach. He attended Brown Deer High School in Wisconsin, where he excelled in football and earned a letter.
Chatman earned a bachelor’s degree in Educational Leadership and Human Services from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 2011. He continued his academic career by earning a master’s degree in Adult and Community Education from Ball State University in 2013. Chatman was a key member of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh football team from 2006 to 2010 when he played defensive end and tackle and earned four letters.
Coaching Journey
Chatman’s coaching career began at his alma institution. During the 2010 and 2011 seasons, he coached the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s defensive line. From 2012 to 2013, the 35-year-old served as a defensive graduate assistant at Ball State University, where he played an important role in the team’s straight bowl game berths.
His coaching career progressed as he took on jobs in several institutions:
- In 2014, Chatman served as Butler University’s defensive line coach and assistant recruiting coordinator.
- In 2015, he served as a graduate assistant at Texas A&M University, especially on the defensive line.
- In 2016, he was the defensive line coach at Elon University.
- Chatman attended Tennessee State University from 2017 to 2018, first working with defensive ends and linebackers in 2017. By 2018, his duties have grown to include the post of special teams coordinator.
He subsequently joined the Cincinnati Bengals as a defensive assistant for the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Chatman began working as a defensive analyst at Louisiana State University (LSU) in 2021, mostly focused on the defensive line. By 2022, he had temporarily worked at Tulane University before accepting a defensive line coach post at the University of Colorado in March. Following this spell, he returned to Tulane as the defensive line coach following a brief stint as temporary defensive line coach at Louisiana State University.

Gerald Chatman and Lauren Hoffmann tied the wedding on July 11, 2015. They have three girls (Kinley, Amelia, and Maya) and one boy. Lauren Hoffmann Chatman is a critical care registered nurse at IU Health Methodist Hospital.
Florida Gators’ New Defensive Line Coach?
According to sources, Florida wants to hire Tulane’s Gerald Chatman as defensive line coach under Billy Napier. Gerald Chatman is slated to succeed Sean Spencer, who was fired on November 27 after serving two seasons under Billy Napier. Although a formal contract between Florida and Chatman has not been signed, all sides have agreed that Chatman will take the coaching position.
