  • Clark was made “Major General in the Armies of France and Commander-in-Chief of the French Revolutionary Legion on the Mississippi River” by Genêt. Clark started organizing a campaign to capture New Madrid, St. Louis, Natchez, and New Orleans, enlisting the help of old allies like Benjamin Logan and John Montgomery and gaining the tacit backing of Kentucky Governor Isaac Shelby.
