Gavin Newsom was born in San Francisco and is a fourth-generation San Franciscan. Tessa Thomas and William Alfred Newsom III were his parents. He attended Redwood High School and graduated in 1985. He was a baseball and basketball player in high school. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Santa Clara University in 1989, relying on a baseball scholarship and student loans. Newsom was elected to a second term as Mayor of San Francisco in 2007. He won this election with 72 percent of the vote cast, despite earlier attempts by the San Francisco Progressive Community to run other strong candidates against him.
In April 2009, he announced his intention to run for the California gubernatorial seat in the 2010 elections; despite receiving an endorsement from Bill Clinton in support of his bid, he was forced to withdraw from the race due to low poll numbers throughout the campaign. Gavin then filed paperwork to express his interest in becoming California’s lieutenant governor in February 2010, won the election in November 2010, and was re-elected for a second term in November 2014.
