Fernando started cycling at the age of 15, and he signed a professional deal with the Etixx–Quick-Step cycling squad for the 2016 season. And, in 2015 and 2016, he won back-to-back gold medals in the Omnium at the World Championships. He also placed fourth in the men’s Omnium at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Fernando won the omnium and Madison competitions at the 2012 UCI Juniors Track World Championships prior to his professional road career. The next year, he won the under-23 Pan-American road race and participated in the Tour de l’Avenir. He did not win a stage at this festival, but he did win the bunch sprint behind the breakaway on the first stage. He came second in the points race. In the same year, he captured the omnium at the 2014–15 UCI Track Cycling World Cup round in London.
Fernando Gaviria rose to international prominence after his first big road cycling winning streak, which began in January 2015. It happened during the Tour de San Luis, one of the most important early-season cycling events. Fernando surprised himself by winning the first stage of the race.
