Eric was severely injured in a vehicle accident in 1981, which left him unable to speak or walk. He had a difficult time relearning to speak and walk after he had been paralyzed.
However, the actor was also embroiled in a protracted struggle with a drug addiction that spanned decades. In 1987, Eric was taken into custody on charges of cocaine and marijuana possession. Additionally, he was charged with resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer with a punch. As a result, the actor was imprisoned for around 36 hours before pleading guilty and being freed. When Eliza and Eric got into a fight at home in 1995, Eric ended up in jail for slamming her against a wall.
After posting $50,000 in bond, the actor was freed without facing any legal repercussions. As soon as he came out of prison, Eric made an announcement: he was ending his drug habit. In addition, Eric and Eliza reached a mutual agreement to end their dispute.
