- Maltais started skating at the age of two and hockey at the age of four while growing up in southern Ontario. She played for the Oakville Hornets in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) throughout high school, where she was team captain in 2016–17 and established a team record for career points with 147.
- In 2017, she enrolled at Ohio State University and started playing for the women’s ice hockey team. She led the WCHA in points-per-game during her debut NCAA season, scoring 40 points in 37 games and setting the record for the most WCHA Rookie of the Month accolades, winning three times.
