Emily Oster was born in New Haven, Connecticut on February 14, 1980. Sharon Oster and Ray Fair are her parents. They are both economics professors at Yale University. Emily’s parents spotted her talking to herself in her cot when she was just two years old. They then installed a tape recorder in her chamber to capture her conversations. Oster parents gave the records to a linguist and psychologist with whom they were pals.

They discovered that Emily’s vocabulary was far more complicated after examining her speech. It was different when she was chatting alone vs when she was dealing with grownups. In 1989, Narratives from the Crib was released as a collection of these pieces. In 2006, the book was reissued. Emily earned her B.An in 2002 and her Ph.D. in 2006. She attended Harvard University.
