Efren Manalang Reyes was born in Mexico, Pampanga, Philippines on August 26, 1945. He moved to Manila when he was four years old. Later, he began working as a Billiards attendant at his uncle’s billiards hall, where he learned a variety of cue sports. He wasn’t very tall at the time, so he used to stand on the Coca-Cola cases while playing. He used to sleep on the pool table at night. He is commonly referred to as The Magician and Bata. His coworkers referred to him as “Every.”

Efren Reyes began playing billiards in the 1960s and quickly established himself as a winner, allowing him to compete in significant events and tournaments. He was a member of the Philippine team that competed in the RP-Japan Pocket Billiards Tournament in 1978.
In the finals of the Philippine Professional Pocket Billiards Championships in 1983, Reyes defeated Pepito Dacer. In the 1980s, he traveled to the United States to compete on an international level.
