While attending Abingdon School in Oxfordshire, England, he met the other members of Radiohead for the first time. O’Brien claimed that his role in the band was to service and assist Thom Yorke, who wrote the songs. In 1999, he contributed to the music for the BBC television series Eureka Street. On April 16, 2011, he appeared on the Fighting Talk sports section of BBC Radio 5 Live in favor of Record Shop Day.

Ed started Ear Opener, an online video education for children that teaches them how to create music, in 2020. After securing a record contract with EMI in 1991, On a Friday altered its name to Radiohead. Creep, their first song, was published in 1992.
