In 1986, he hosted the Detroit Black Journal chat show. Gordon freelanced for Black Entertainment Television, an embryonic cable network (BET).
In 1988, he became the full-time anchor of BET News, which focuses on African-American social concerns and popular culture. In 1990, he started the Conversation with Ed Gordon series. Clinton, Shakur, Poitier, and Houston are among his topics. After the 1992 Los Angeles riots, he hosted L.A. Aftermath: Black Men Speak Out and interviewed President George H. W. Bush.
He joined NBC News as a daytime anchor, host of Internight on MSNBC, and Today contributor. In 2000, he became the nightly BET News host. In 2001, he took over BET Tonight from Tavis Smiley.
