Camille Diane Friesen was born on January 4, 1937, in Tacoma, Washington to Ben Friesen and Claire (nee Portnoy). Her father sold life insurance and her mother was a housewife.
Cannon attended Western Seattle High School and the University of Washington for two and a half years. Her Ashkenazi mother, a Russian immigrant, raised her in the Jewish faith, while her father was a Baptist. Her younger brother, jazz musician David Friesen, is also a musician.
