Dream Cazzaniga was born in 1977 in Tuscan, Arizona. In an April 2019 interview with Vogue, she recalled her mother, Luna, giving birth to her in the autumn of 1977. She also described the Tuscan countryside as wild and fascinating at the time.
Cazzaniga was 45 years old and lived in Paris with her young family. Her maternal ancestors came to Detroit as part of the Great Migration from Georgia. Her mother’s grandfather was a production worker at the Ford plant. He was of African and Quechuan (South American) descent. Luna’s mother is of African-American and European heritage.
Luna died of a heroin overdose on May 17, 1979, one year and six months after Dream was born. As a result, her father Juan and his family raised her in Europe. Cazzaniga claims she has never fully grasped her Italian father’s cultural heritage.
