Was he fired by Iran before the World Cup?
According to reports, Iran sacked Skocic five months before the 2022 FIFA World Cup, despite taking the squad to the tournament. Skocic took over as head coach in February 2020, winning 15 of his first 18 matches but losing two of his last three.

His Upbringing And Early Career
Skocic was born in the Croatian city of Rijeka. In 1987, he began his playing career as a midfielder with the local team Rijeka. His time with the Spanish teams’ Las Palmas and Compostela made him the first Croatian footballer to play overseas. In 1996, he returned to his previous team Rijeka. He played for Novalja from 2001 to 2004, before retiring in 2004 following a brief spell with Al-Ittihad.

Skocic went on to finish the Football Academy at the Croatian Football Academy and the Coach Education and Training Department at the Zagreb Faculty of Kinesiology after retiring from playing. He became manager of his local club Rijeka in 2005 after gaining the UEFA-PRO Coach Diploma and a Professional Bachelor of the Coaching Profession, and guided the team to the Croatian Cup in the 2005-06 season.
In 2007, he took over as head coach of Interblock Ljubljana and guided the team out of a tough league scenario by helping the club to remain in the first league. Not only that, but he guided the squad to two titles. The squad won the Slovenian Cup and a Super Cup in 2007-08. In the 2009-10 season, he took over as head coach of the Al-Arabi club, leading them to the Crown Prince Cup and Federation Cup finals. After a brief stay with the Al Nassr football club in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, he returned to his local club.
Nonetheless, he was removed from duty after just 43 days due to a string of bad performances, after which he took over Malavan on a two-year deal. Under his leadership, the team achieved its highest league result since 2005. He worked for Foolad from 2014 to 2016, Khooneh is Khooneh in 2018, Sanat Naft in 2019, and Iran in 2020.
