Domenico Berardi began his football career with the Cosenza youth club and continued to play until 2010. He joined the Sassuolo youth team in 2010 and began his career there. On August 27, 2012, he made his senior debut for Sassuolo in Serie B against Cesena at the age of 18. On September 1, 2012, he scored his first professional goal in a 2-1 home win over Crotone.

He made 39 appearances for the club in the 2012-13 season, scoring 11 goals and contributing 6 assists in all competitions as Sassuolo won Serie B and was promoted to Serie A the following season.

He was voted the 2013 Serie B Best Player after scoring 11 goals to assist Sassuolo in winning the Serie B title and a historic promotion to Serie A.
