Career

Despite declining to work out for any teams prior to the draft, Dion Waiters was selected fourth overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2012. He was then chosen to participate in the Rising Stars Challenge game during the 2013 NBA All-Star Weekend. Finally, after his rookie season, he was named the NBA’s fourth-best overall rookie and finished fifth in Rookie of the Year voting with 21 points. In addition, in 2014, he was able to compete in the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge.

Similarly, in a loss to the Miami Heat that same year, he recorded his first career double-double with 17 points and a career-high 11 assists. Dion was traded from the Cavaliers to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a three-team trade in January 2015. He was then able to sign with the Miami Heat on July 26, 2016. He was able to make his debut for the Heat in their season opener against the Orlando Magic on October 26. Waiters re-signed with the Heat on July 7, 2017. Then, on December 28, 2018, he was assigned to the Sioux Falls Skyforce, Miami’s NBA G League affiliate team. Then, on January 2, 2019, he made another appearance for the Heat. However, on October 19, 2019, he was suspended for Miami’s first game of the 2019–20 season for “conduct detrimental to the team.” In addition, he had to miss a game due to a panic attack he had while flying to the game. Two days later, the Heat suspended him for ten games for the consumed edible, including the previous game he missed.
