Dennis DeYoung Biography

Dennis DeYoung was raised in Roseland, Chicago, by his parents, Maurice and Loraine DeYoung. DeYoung began his career at the age of 14 with two of his neighbor friends, Chuck and John Panozzo, in 1961. In the late 1960s, the trio recruited two guitarists, James Young and John Curulewski.

Before becoming Styx in 1970, DeYoung and his bandmates renamed themselves TW4 in 1968. And the band quickly found success. DeYoung spent his early years in the Chicago suburbs, where he was also taught music. During this time, the band performed in school auditoriums and other small venues. They quickly rose to national and international prominence.

DeYoung, a self-taught keyboardist, rose quickly to become one of rock’s most valuable keyboard players. Through his keyboard playing, DeYoung has described many of his steps while performing a concert. He appeared on the covers of ‘Contemporary Keyboard Magazine’ after achieving fame. Styx returned to the studio in 1990 for the album ‘Edge of the Century.’

Deyoung wrote the song ‘Show Me The Way’ for his son Matthew, which received a lot of radio play and peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. In the year 2008, DeYoung was featured as an artist on the German Night of the Proms. He accompanied Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees on the song “How Deep Is Your Love” by playing piano.
