Deborah Cox and her longtime spouse Lascelles Stephens, whom she married in 1998, have three small children. Their first child, son Isaiah, was born on July 1, 2003, followed by their second child, daughter Sumayah, on June 29, 2006, and their third child, daughter Kaila Michelle, on February 23, 2009. When her children were born, Cox was largely preoccupied with her job, but her husband assisted her in finding a balance between her career and parenting her children.
During a promotional trip in Toronto in November 2012 (via The Globe and Mail), the singer said that she could only find a balance due to the amazing support she received, particularly from her husband, Stephens, who is also a composer, producer, and now full-time manager. “My mother, mother-in-law, aunts, uncles, and sisters will visit for a month at a time.” Everyone contributes. It’s all about remaining connected, and we do all we can to ensure that occurs. “I want my kids to know who their relations are,” she adds.
Deborah Cox and her husband first met in high school.
Cox and her husband’s amazing journey, which led to their children, began when the now-married pair met in high school. The vocalist attended Scarborough’s John XXIII Catholic Elementary School, Claude Watson School for the Arts, and Earl Haig Secondary School before enrolling at Earl Haig Secondary School in Toronto. She was unable to get a recording contract with a Canadian record company after finishing her schooling. As a result, in 1994, she flew to Los Angeles with Stephens to advance her career. She immediately became Celine Dion’s backup singer for six months, and while on tour, she met legendary music producer Clive Davis, who agreed to create her self-titled first album. Throughout it all, Cox’s spouse supported her and assisted her in launching her profession. In the meanwhile, he identified himself as a composer and music producer.
Deborah Cox’s husband assisted her in raising children.
As previously said, Stephens played a significant part in supporting the singer in raising their children by assisting her in finding a balance between business and family. She also confessed in a 2008 interview that parenting was a “selfless position,” stating she wouldn’t advocate it to anybody who didn’t want to share “because that truly is what you have to do when you become a mother.”
She went on to say that parents must be accessible to their children and their needs. Meanwhile, she said that she was “still learning” how to combine her profession and family since it was demanding on any parent. “So, being the sort of people we are, my husband and I take satisfaction in being able to accomplish it thus far without a nanny,” she continued. Cox and Stephens are now enjoying their time as parents to their children. The singer, in particular, uses Instagram often to post photos of her family. She most recently published photos of herself with her children in November 2021, expressing gratitude that she and her family had overcome a difficult few years due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
