Both performed as stand-up comedians when they started a friendship and agreed to work in one another’s shows.
They formed their act and made their Atlantic City debut at the 500 Club on July 24, 1946. It did not go well, and the proprietor of the show advised them to work on their performance. They chose to be more brusque in their presentations, incorporating songs, slapstick, and traditional vaudeville humor. The audience liked the “wild” performance, and the duo was lauded for their impromptu deeds. The act finally secured them a series of lucrative engagements along the East Coast and a run at New York’s Copacabana.

Following their performance with Frank Sinatra, the two became friends and formed a band with Joey Bishop, Peter Lawford, and Sammy Davis Jr. For an extended period, the two men collaborated on films and became so well-known that they influenced their political views.
