Over the weekend, a 51-year-old man died while racing in the Ironman Wisconsin triathlon, according to event officials. On Facebook, race organizers confirmed the death of a racer during the IRONMAN Wisconsin triathlon on Sunday. The man was named Dax Bakken, a military veteran who participated in Operation Desert Storm and was the father of three children, according to a GoFundMe site set up to help his wife and children. Bakken passed out during the bike phase of the race near the hamlet of Cross Plains, according to IRONMAN Wisconsin authorities.
He was treated by a race official and an off-duty police officer before being transferred to a local hospital by EMS, where he was subsequently confirmed dead by a race spokeswoman. His family will shortly announce an obituary and funeral information for Dax Bakken.
Dax Bakken Died In The Hospital: His Family Weeps
According to family members on the GoFundMe, Bakken “had trained and dreamed of” participating in the whole 140.6-mile triathlon, which consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile cycle ride, and a 26.2-mile run. The father was the “primary support” for his family, which included his wife, his eight-year-old daughter, and his two children. He had just completed his master’s degree.
