He had no desire to play football again once his playing career ended.
David said in an interview that he did not want to continue playing football after his playing career ended. He realized that when he was given an assistant position at SV Darmstadt immediately after the season ended. He wanted to try new things and learn new things. When he reflected seriously on what he desired, an idea came to him: become a teacher, which he saw to be solid employment with lots of vacations and free time.
So, with that in mind, he went to school and became a sports and biology instructor. He enjoyed his work since no one told him what to do or what not to do in professional soccer. He sat out soccer for two to three years and maintained a safe distance. But, eventually, his enthusiasm for football returned to him. Along with his degree, he became a qualified coach at the end of 2007. He considered returning to coaching since he already had a coaching certificate.
