David Lee was born In St. Louis, Missouri, on April 29, 1983. Both John Burroughs School, where he completed middle school, and Chaminade College Preparatory School, where he completed high school, are in the St. Louis suburbs.
Lee was left-handed by birth, but he learned to play the game with his right hand after breaking his left arm. Lee was selected to the first team of high school All-Americans by Paradise magazine.
Lee accepted the sports scholarship to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. He participated in basketball for Billy Donovan’s Florida Gators team while still an undergraduate at this university.
