David Karp is an American Web developer and entrepreneur who co-founded the microblogging site Tumblr. Karp grew up on Manhattan’s Upper West Side as the elder of two sons born to a teacher and a composer.

David Karp was born in New York City on July 6, 1986, and grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. His mother was a science teacher from San Anselmo, California, and her name was Barbara Ackerman. Michael D. Karp, his father, was a film and television composer. David also has a younger brother named Kevin, and his parents divorced when he was 17 years old. He began learning HTML at the age of eight and then started designing websites for businesses.
He also only attended the Bronx High School of Science for one year before dropping out at 15 and beginning homeschooling. Later, he considered attending MIT or a college in New York, never returning to high school, never earning his high school diploma.

His first technical position was with UrbanBaby. He was summoned there to complete a project due in two days. David finished the project in four hours because he was highly talented.
